How to Troubleshoot a Car Window That Won't Close

When it comes to your car windows, it can be a vital part of not only safety but comfort as you drive. The last thing you want to deal with on a hot day is a window that won't go down, so it can feel like a significant problem if you find it stuck. There are a few different reasons why this issue could be happening, and it might require car window repair, or it may be much easier than that to address. Here are just a few common areas you can check before calling a professional.

Apply Pressure

If your window goes up and down with a crank, you can manually pull the window up in many cases. The safest way to do this is by using both hands, applying pressure to both sides of the window, and pulling up on it. One thing you'll want to be aware of is that this can cause a separation from the frame motor, requiring placing a choke to keep the glass in place.

Finding a solution can be more complicated if the window is stuck in the up position. Wiggling it can cause the glass to disconnect and fall to the bottom of the door, so we recommend leaving it up until you can bring it to a professional.

Check for Mechanical Issues

In some cases, the fix could be something as simple as the glass has separated from the frame, or possibly the handle has come off the crank attachment, which will require taking apart the door. In addition, if you believe the power window motor has stopped working, the wiring will need to be checked to see if it's connected properly.

Other Options

If you have an electrical motor that operates your window, a blown fuse could prevent this from functioning correctly. When you press the up and down button in some vehicles, you may hear a noise inside the door that can indicate the switch is ok, but the motor may not be. Once you have tested this, if you find the fuse is not the problem, you may need to consult your vehicle's manual or call a professional.
